Smart and Sustainable Packaging

This course aims to provide an introduction and overview on different packaging materials, different packaging strategies and different smart applications for making packaging more sustainable. Based on the course material, the participants should gain increased understanding of both the challenges and opportunities there exist in developing more sustainable packaging systems, as well as insights into the complexity and trade-offs involved.

Background

In dialogue with Lund University, Packbridge has identified needs for business and higher education for a common increased understanding of each other’s needs and realities and arrived at the forms for a business-based course program titledtThe Fundamentals of Packaging wich consists of two courses;
course 1 ”Packaging Logistics and Sustainability” and course 2 ”Smart and Sustainable packaging”.

Course content and plan


The course is online and carried out by whenever and wherever oneself wants within a period of two to three months.

The course includes the following three modules:

  • Packaging materials
  • Packaging r-strategies – reduce, reuse, recycle or recover?
  • Smart packaging.

Where each course module consists of:

  • Literature to read (2-3 academic papers/reports)
  • A video and slides providing an overview of the topic
  • A quiz for examination – based on the content covered in the literature and video.

Objectives and learning outcomes

The objective of the course is to provide a foundation to key areas related to sustainable packaging alternatives. Key learning outcomes are:

  • explain the different alternatives of packaging materials, packaging strategies and smart packaging in relation to sustainable development.
  • define and describe opportunities and challenges between different packaging solutions in relation to sustainable development.
  • understand the complexity and trade-off involved in developing sustainable packaging.
